Macquarie Island 2003

Boys will be Girls

It seems to be Antarctic tradition that expeditioners cross dress! I am not sure how it all started, however I do know that in 1914 when Shackleton and his crew were heading to Antarctica on the ill fated Endurance, the men put on a show for christmas and a few of them dressed up as women, with clothes and make-up that they must have obviously brought with them. The show was a great source of entertainment, and the "women" very popular. My guess is that due to the lack of women on Antarctic expeditions, particularly in days of old, that they had to make up for it occasionally, and it's also great for a laugh.
The tradition still lives on, and what better way to greet tourists on an Antarctic station than with a few "lovely ladies" dressed to kill..mmm!
Pictured with the Antarctic/sub Antarctic queens are the latest influx of Heritage Expeditions tourists to Macca, which arrived on the 10th of January and spent 2 days looking over the Island from the ship and certain locations on the Island, including the station. They had excellent weather with the temp getting up to a tropical 8.4 deg C on a sunny Sunday. Who could ask for more!!
