Getting results. [pg1,

All you need is
love ! - famous words from a famous band, but it is all too
true. We certainly believe that it is the basis for success
with children no matter what their condition. When children
are loved, they are happy, and when they are happy, they enjoy
learning and want to learn, particularly if you make learning
a positive and fun experience.
It appears that with children with autism spectrum disorders
you must enter and be accepted in "their" closed
in world. Once you have been acknowledged into their space
and accepted you begin to be able to communicate with them.
This concept was brought to our attention from the SON-RISE
program, and the books that were written in conjunction with
and as a result of the Kaufmans experience from bringing up,
and educating a child who was diagnosed as severely autistic
with a low IQ and deemed to be helpless, he is now a University
graduate with a near genius IQ. Their success basically says
it all - All you need is love ! - (and a lot of hard work
and long hours), however when you see the results, the work
is not hard and the hours are not long.
From the very
beginning, even before Isa was diagnosed and we thought she
just had a speech problem, we were aware of the concept of
early intervention. It seems to be the way for many developmental
problems.
We chose not to use any drugs what so ever, to us that seems
like covering up the problem instead of fixing it. We found
an excellent special early learning centre - The
Briars, unfortunately after Isa turned 5 she had to leave,
this centre gave her an excellent start, she thoroughly enjoyed
going there, and the staff were excellent, they loved her
and she loved them back, and learning was a breeze for her.
The next big step was when Liz went to the Option
Institute in America to do the start up program. There
they taught her the concepts of the SON-RISE
program and the basics of home schooling. When she got back
we started to put into action what she had learnt, we built
a special therapy room where she does her learning, and with
the help of volunteers, specially trained
therapists, the MINDA
association and other support groups, Isa is moving ahead
in leaps and bounds. Other activities which she also participates
in and loves doing are: Swimming, Music therapy, SAMONAS
auditory therapy, Kinder gym, playgroups, short visits to
shopping centres, and many other everyday activities. All
this along with a special diet which eliminates dairy products
and reduces gluten and casein intake, supplemented with colloidal
minerals and vitamin B complex are having amazing results.
