Getting results - the progress
keeps going. [pg1,

It has been quite a while since we have updated this page. Isa has been progressing in leaps and bounds and I am a bit overwhelmed as to where to start.
Liz continues to keep making her own resources such as cue cards, calendars, diaries, props, feelings cards and games, shopping games for maths and independent living, the list goes on (check out her new web site isybee.com.au)
Recently Liz has been concentrating on teaching Isa growing up development, personal safety such as the Circles Program, working intensively on future, past and now concepts, days, weeks, months and years (time) and geography so Isa can get a grasp of the how rest of the world and time all fit together and affect her and her world. Another area we have been working on is communication and social interaction such as conversation. We have been encouraging her to interact with other children in play and activities so she can interact socially and in conversation. To further extend this we have been making up interactive stories with her and her favorite characters (such as the Bananas etc.) so she can learn the basics of a conversation.
We have also been taking her out in progressively to social outings such as the Royal Show, Cinema, Children's Theatre events, Circus, that type of thing. Liz will mark the date on the calendar well ahead so she can see and prepare for it, then count down the weeks / days to the event. This prepares her for it and teaches her about time. We have found that Isa reacts very well to knowing well ahead about an event, particularly if written down, she seems to understand it and can deal with it exceptionally well, however if the event is unplanned or not written down she can get upset or confused.
Lately we have been getting further into the Bio-Chemical side of things as well. We have always been aware of the need for a suitable diet and supplements for these children but have never been fully aware of the implications. This is a huge area and can get very deep, we have not got to the deep end yet but are slowly wading through the enormous amounts of information on the web and in programs. One leader in this field that we can recommend and many other parents have discovered is Dr Amy Yasko, she has a web site and a forum which parents / carers or ASD persons can join and share information.
One thing is for sure, with unconditional love and positive can do attitude, the intensive one on one ABA style therapy, the correct diet and supplements to suit the child's composition, a general fun approach and organised planning ahead, one can work wonders with children, ASD or not.
