• Who are we and why are we here?
It is probanbly best summed up by these words from our Station Leader, Paul.

"ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition) operates three
permanent continental bases in Antarctica, and one at Macquarie Island
in the sub-Antarctic.  The purpose of our presence is to help preserve
Antarctica as a haven for peace and science, to better understand our
global climate, to protect the Antarctic environment and to maintain the
Antarctic Treaty system".

• So who are we?
Every year ANARE recruits  people to run and maintain the stations so that science and research can be successfully deployed from Antarctica year round.
There is usualy two groups as part of the recruitment, Summer and Winter staff. Usualy the Summer staff come in on the first voyage for the season, to the particular station. They usualy consist mainly of scientists and construction personnel. Most of the science is conducted during summer when wildlife is abundant and conditions suitable. Any construction or major maintenance projects are also carried out during summer due to the favourable conditions.
The Winter crew usualy come in halfway through the Summer period. The Summerer's leave on the last voyage from station for that season which is around late February / early March, and the Winter crew will stay till halfway through the next Summer, depending on how the shipping schedule goes, that can be for around 12 - 14 months.
During this period the Station has maintenance and upgrade projects carried out which are not so affected by the weather conditions. Some science and research is also carried out during the winter such as  Meteorology and Atmospheric and Space Physics.

• What do we do for work and play?
Work.......

Paul - Station Leader The title speaks for itself, he runs the administrative side of things and keeps us all in line (or tries to)	Don - Plant inspector and Deputy Station Leader He runs the Diesel Workshop and is responsible for all the plant machinery and vehicles on station. He also assists Paul in the running of the station and is Station Leader during Pauls absence.
Cameron - Diesel Mechanic  (and chief hydroponics greenthumb). Repairs and maintenance on all station machinery and vehicles, and makes sure we get our greens!!	Critter - Diesel Mechanic (and chief brew master) Ditto as Cam, and is also responsible for brewing the all important home brew..
Gary - Senior Meteorology Observer.(and part time hippie) Gary looks at the weather and makes up reports and statistics on his observations and readings. He is also an infinite resource on anything weather.	Vic - Meteorology Observer (and part time chef) Vic assists Garry in the Met office and shares the responsibilities such as the baloon releasing twice daily, come snow, blizz, or gale. (he also cooks a mean loaf of bread)
Greg - Meteorology Technical Officer. Greg maintains and installs anything electronic / technical within the Met area, he also assists with the weather observations and balloon releasing.	Anthony (A.B.) - Atmospheric and Space Physisist Conducts experiments and maintains instruments that give information on what's happening in geospace, to assist in forecasting space weather and the behaviour of the Earths magnetic field.
